It's a fun adventure full of historical significance the entire family will love. Fishermen are welcome!

The reason was the big bear.” Join us as we climb towards airplane-like views and learn the story of the big bear.

WALLOW FIRE ORIGIN - Bear Wallow Wilderness
- Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
- Duration: Full Day
- Distance from Alpine: 1 hour on paved and gravel roads suitable for most vehicles
The Bear Wallow Wilderness is the least visited of the four wilderness areas in the White Mountains. According to the Apache National Forest, "It is home to some of the largest acreage of virgin ponderosa pine in the Southwest, venerable reminders of a once extensive forest of these giants. Along the length of the area, through a blanket of pine, fir, and spruce, Bear Wallow Creek flows year-round and is shaded by green riparian hardwoods during summer." Words written before the largest wildfire in Arizona's history grew from this very location in 2011, spending 48 days consuming great swaths of more than half a million acres. Some stately giants remain, but many others were not so fortunate. This is a trip of raw beauty, full of highlights and lowlights of what man and Mother Nature are capable of.

HISTORIC BEAR MOUNTAIN CABIN & LOOKOUT - Blue Range Primitive Area
- Difficulty: Challenging
- Duration: Full Day
- Distance from Alpine: 90 minutes on gravel roads, suitable for most vehicles
Bear Mountain Cabin and Lookout are seldom visited and well worth the 3,000 foot elevation gain it takes to get here from the Blue River. Exceptional views will be with us most of the day as we first ascend Telephone Ridge and then Bear Mountain. At the top is a storage shed (an old cabin) built in 1928, the present cabin and privy were built in 1940 and the 45-foot high lookout tower in was built in 1933. The facilities are full of history and have been nominated for National Register eligibility.
