Map & Route

Trail Overview
Aker Lake Trail is a gentle forest hike that leads through a beautiful mix of mature spruce and fir, recovering burn areas, and open mountain meadows before arriving at one of the White Mountains' most peaceful alpine lakes.
With only a gradual elevation change, well-defined tread, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the scenery, it's an excellent choice for families, beginning hikers, photographers, and anyone looking for a relaxing day on the trail.
While the walk to the lake is mostly downhill, remember that the return trip is a steady climb back to the trailhead. The grade remains comfortable throughout, making this a rewarding hike for a wide range of abilities.

Trail Conditions
Trailhead
The trail begins beneath a canopy of mature spruce and fir on a wide, well-established path. Rather than following one continuous grade, it gently weaves across the landscape, dipping into and climbing out of several shallow drainages. These rolling ups and downs create a natural rhythm that keeps the hike engaging without ever becoming strenuous. The tread is smooth and easy to follow, with only occasional roots and rocks.
As you begin enjoying the quiet feel of the trail you'll quickly encounter a T junction marked by a wooden sign. A right turn will land you in the Hannagan Meadow Campground, a left turn will take you to Aker lake.
Forest
As the trail continues, the forest begins to open into areas recovering from the Wallow Fire. Young aspen, pine, and wildflowers gradually replace the dense canopy, offering longer views across the surrounding landscape. The trail remains well-defined with a mostly soft dirt surface and only gentle elevation changes.
Butterfly Cienega
As the trail continues, the forest begins to open into areas recovering from the Wallow Fire. Young aspen, pine, and wildflowers gradually replace the dense canopy, offering longer views across the surrounding landscape. The trail remains well-defined with a mostly soft dirt surface and only gentle elevation changes.
One of the highlights of the hike is when the trail dips into Butterfly Cienega, where the surrounding meadows come alive with seasonal wildflowers. During summer, butterflies are often abundant, making this a natural place to slow down, take photographs, and enjoy the quiet.
Final Approach to Aker Lake
The trail remains easy to follow through this open section and will cross a two-track road just beyond the meadow, where the trail returns again to mixed forest before making its gradual descent toward Aker Lake.
As you near the destination, glimpses of blue water begin appearing through the trees before the shoreline finally comes into view. The trail ends at the edge of the lake, where grassy openings and shaded shoreline provide excellent places to relax before beginning the return hike.

Gear Notes
- Trail runners or light hiking shoes are well suited to the smooth, well-maintained tread.
- A hiking umbrella can provide welcome shade in open meadows and quick protection during passing summer showers.
- Trekking Poles are helpful on the rolling terrain, occasional rocks and roots, and gradual uphill return to the trailhead.
- Consider carrying a satellite communicator (such as a Garmin inReach or similar).
Safety Notes
- Remote location with extended emergency response times.
- Weather can change quickly, especially during the summer monsoon season.
- Portions of the trail travel along the exposed rim, where lightning becomes a serious hazard during thunderstorms. If storms develop, seek lower ground and/or shelter.
