Trail Overview

P Bar Lake Trail is a pleasant forest hike beginning near Hannagan Meadow that climbs steadily to a scenic ridge overlooking the Blue Range Primitive Area. At the junction with Foote Creek Trail, hikers can continue north to the small seasonal waters of P Bar Lake or head south toward Hannagan Meadow, making this trail equally enjoyable as a short out-and-back or as part of a longer adventure.

Quiet forests, wildlife, and occasional views make it a rewarding hike despite its modest length.

Trail Conditions

Crossing Hannagan Creek

The hike begins with a crossing of Hannagan Creek before climbing steadily away from U.S. Highway 191. During dry periods, the creek is often little more than a sandy channel, while seasonal runoff may require a simple rock hop or shallow crossing. The lower trail traverses a recovering burn area where the tread is well defined and generally free of major obstacles.

Climbing to the Ridge

The trail gains elevation at a steady but comfortable pace as it climbs the hillside through young forest and scattered snags left by the Wallow Fire. A single switchback marks the steepest section before the trail enters a more mature mixed conifer forest. As you gain the ridge, occasional views begin to open toward Hannagan Meadow and the surrounding mountains.

Ridge Traverse

Beyond the climb, the character of the trail changes noticeably. The grade eases as the trail winds through open stands of fir and pine with gentle rolling terrain. Wildlife is commonly encountered along this stretch, and hikers may spot mule deer, elk, wild turkey, or evidence of the area's many other forest inhabitants.

Foote Creek Trail Junction

Approximately 0.9 miles from the trailhead, P Bar Lake Trail reaches its junction with Foote Creek Trail #76. From here, hikers can continue north to the small seasonal waters of P Bar Lake or head south toward Hannagan Meadow. The junction also offers expansive views toward the Blue Range Primitive Area and western New Mexico, making it a rewarding destination even for those not continuing beyond.

Trail Condition

P Bar Lake Trail is well maintained with a clearly defined tread and straightforward navigation. Recent volunteer work has removed numerous downed trees, brushed back encroaching vegetation, improved sections of tread, and stabilized a washed-out section near the lower trail. The result is a clean, enjoyable corridor that currently requires only routine maintenance.
